As good as it gets regarding Italian food in San Diego. After resigning Italian food due to previous encounters in Hillcrest and Little Italy, I finally brought myself to try it once more. Last year, my humble abode was near this restaurant and after the seductive reviews I read on Yelp, I figured it'd be a nice place to bring my aunt out to try. We came here for dinner and ordered the seafood linguine, the steamed clams, and a pasta with spicy tomato sauce. The dishes were divine. tantalizing. The best I've since being on the East coast. I can't wait to eat here again. It sure made up for the past 6 years of average Americanized Italian food.

This is the third time I have been here. My wife wanted a "date night" on Friday and this place didn't disappoint. As many have stated - good Italian in East County. Yes! And this isn't the only place. We made a last minute reservation for Friday. Came in and sat at a cozy two-top. We ordered some red wine by the glass - by the way the Mont Pellier Syrah is really good! We started with the Carciofi Ripieni - which are artichokes stuffed with crab and parmesesan cheese. Incredible - probably the best part of the meal. Then I had the Penne Gosolone - which is penne pasta, short rib and goat cheese. My wife went with her standby of Chicken Parmesan. The penne plate was very good and the chicken parmesan was cooked perfectly. Two complaints - our plates went to the wrong table first. I HATE that and complained loudly! And second, I would have preferred that the chicken parmesan come with a pasta side, instead of mashed potatoes. And - the mashed potatoes had no real flavor. But the other parts of the dining expereince overcame those flaws. For dessert I had a second Syrah. The cool part - the chef/owner was there overseeing operations and greeting customers. This restaurant is certainly a gem in the East County and reasonably priced. I will be back, especially because it is in the neighborhood! Make reservations on the weekend - it fills up fast!

My daughter and I ate here and it's my second meal here. I used a Groupon ($15 for $30 worth of food) both times and it was worth the price, but because the food is a TINY bit on the expensive side, it is not a GREAT deal (if you're really going for a great deal on Groupon or something like that). We both had cheaper dinners and I think I spent an extra $10 or so to cover the taxes, overage and tip. Food was good both times. Lasagna was good, not great. Daughter had papardelli which she said she liked. They bring you hot bread which is nice. We drank water. Service was good. No complaints there. My rating is 5*= great 4*= good 3*= ok/ average 2*=below average 1*= bad Buy the Groupon and give it a try!

I hate to say this because I am definitely going to sound like a snob, but I never expect much when eating at a restaurant in La Mesa. It isn't exactly a dining destination spot. However, I was pleasantly surprised when my mom suggested we go here to celebrate a dual birthday. The place was packed - apparently, everyone knows this place is great. But we had a reservation and therefore, a table. We received great service throughout the evening and the food was all delicious. I had one of the specials which was a lobster ravioli. It was perfectly portioned and I can still taste how delicate and yummy it was. I wasn't hungry when my dinner was placed in front of me and I still ate the entire thing because it was so good. My husband had the seafood stew and really enjoyed it. I can't believe I am writing this, but I actually look forward to coming back here. The prices were reasonable, and the quality was as good as any fine dining Italian restaurant. If only there weren't so many families with little kids in here...

Looking for another Italian go to place and found a hidden gem in La Mesa, one of the best Italian restaurants in San Diego County, Antica Trattoria. My girlfriend had tomato soup which I never eat and will come back when it is on special. She also had the asparagus risotto, sublime. I had the oso bucco special and was amazed, on par or better than the old Busalacchi's. Also has a pretty good wine list by the glass and bottle. Service was exceptional, my gf did not bring her reading glasses and one of the staff heard me say "I will read the menu for you" and a pair of reading glasses appeared at the table. My compliments to the entire staff and the ownership for providing a great dining experience

Our favorite Italian restaurant! My husband and I lived in Italy for a few years, so Italian food is something we are very picky about. Antica Trattoria is awesome! We eat here often, and have never had a bad meal. It's kind of tiny inside, but it's cozy and intimate. The service is great too. This is our #1 date night spot!

Really awesome italian restaurant, last time i ate here was with my mom for mothers day. Doesnt look like much from the outside but once you get inside its really quite nice. Authentic italian for a decent price. Never had a disappointment here.

One more thing..." Go to hell" is three words....this isn't fair to you I'm sorry...your skill set does not allow you to learn and grow...I am sorry for picking on you...we clearly are not on the same intellectual level and that is not fair to you.

Been here twice...no gripes from us. It is a quiet and nice Italian restaurant in the Lake Murray area. We would go back. They have good meals and a good drink selection. Good for casual dining and special occasion dining (date, anniversary, special occasion etc). You can expect to spend around $60 for two meals, a couple drinks and tip.

We never come here without the Groupon, which seems to be available permanently. With the Groupon, I think this restaurant is well worth the price. One time, I even ordered a dish that wasn't what I expected, and my boyfriend who knows all the dishes here mentioned to them that he remembered it being different. We weren't complaining, but they were so nice as to give us free dessert. They obviously care about their customers! Besides that, we have always had great service here and have nothing bad to say about it. This restaurant is a perfect spot for a date; fancier than the average restaurant but not too fancy or expensive. My favorite dishes here are the ones with creamy sauces and the calamari, which is crispy the way I like it.

I am so happy this place is only a few blocks away from my house! We came here last night on a whim after getting back into out of town on our one year wedding anniversary. The restaurant was busy at about 9pm on a Saturday but we were seated right away and were surprised how cute it is inside for being in a strip mall. The brussels sprouts appetizer special was amazing, as were both of our entrees. I had the penne with short ribs and my husband had the short ribs. The pasta is up there for one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. My husband was happy with his choice as well, although I didn't try it. We also had a nice affordable bottle of cab. The service was also spot on and they gave us great recommendations. After we said it was out first time dining there and we lived nearby they gave us free tiramisu so we could sample one of their desserts. We will be back often!

Awesome Italian place! I've eaten here twice- first time was take out though. Their menu must change often because last time I ate there and this time I ate (~2 months) there, they had totally different pasta plates. First, they had me at the warm bread and dip.. Yumum. The first time I had pappardelle noodles in a gorgonzola cream sauce and it was fantastic. I was also able to taste 2 other pastas they had and they were all very good. Tonight I had the mixed greens and goat cheese salad and the spinach Gnocci with shortribs in a red sauce. The meat just melted in your mouth. My mom had the crab stuffed salmon and it looked amazing. They have a nice wine list and I indulged in the chocolate soufle- chocolate cake with ice cream which is always good. The waiter we had was delightful. Overall service was fantastic. This is such a cute place and there are so many things on their menu I'd like to try that I might make this a repeat event. It's a little pricey but you are getting what you pay for.

This restaurant is a gem! Exceptional, fine Italian cuisine. The best cioppino ever. Fish specials are outstanding. Service is excellent. Atmosphere is warm and inviting~like you are in an Italian home dining room. The owner is friendly, welcoming and a chef extraordinaire. My only regret is that we didn't discover this restaurant sooner!

It was my second time there last night. The service and quality of the food have been consistent. Both times the food was great, the place is cozy, and the waitstaff are professional. I would definitely go back for a 3rd visit soon!

The food here is amazing. I came here for the first time and tried the pollo with sauteed chicken breast in a cognac porcini cream sauce, topped with spinach and fontina cheese! IT WAS HEAVENLY. The cheese melted so perfectly into the spinach and chicken and the sauce was SO GOOD with bits of mushroom in it. I don't know what "cognac porcini cream sauce" means but I want this sauce on everything now. THE GOOD: Great atmosphere and decor Wonderful waiter and server Great quality food Located in a good neighborhood THE BAD: Nothing was bad except I'm craving porcini cream sauce all day now. Thank goodness I have a Living Social deal to go back! :D

Spouse and I dined there last evening. No reservation, no wait, before 6pm. Ordered wine and appetizer. The wine was good, appetizer Melancane Caprino was fresh and delicious. I ordered Veal Saltimbocca , wife had Calamari. The beauty of Saltimbocca is the marriage of flavors of veal, prosciutto, and sage, with a sauce to hold it all together. This dish missed the point. Did not realize this until I got home, but there was no prosciutto on the plate, sage must have been in the sauce but tasted more like poultry seasoning. What I was served was veal scallopini with sauce and not a very good one at that. My fault for not paying attention. Also meal was delivered to table by another server, might be an issue with that. Receipt says Saltimbocca . The wife's Calamari was ok kind of undercooked. Not as good as last time. What's up in the kitchen? Service was outstanding, quick and attentive. Had cannoli and expresso for dessert, would go back for the cannoli but not the expresso. Didn't know they made such small cups. Come on already.

Wow. This is one of the top three Italian restaurants I've ever been to. I had the calamari steak, which was the best I've ever had. My wife had the eggplant Parmesan, which tasted as fresh made as ever! The place is a hole in the wall, but decorated very nicely, but it's all about the food for me. This place truly rocks the kitchen. I was very amazed by their dishes, which very rarely happens to me. I highly recommend this secret gem.

Came here with the Man again and left with a pleasantly full, satisfied belly. We got there and there were lots of tables available but we did call for a reservation. Got seated quick and it seems like we got there at the right time because by the time we got our apps it started filling up. Started off to a Caesar salad, which was just what I'd been looking for. My babe got the bruschetta, which was divine! Man I can never get enough of that stuff. Next came our entrees. I ordered the Maiale, which is the herb and pepper corn crusted pork loin. Man-they gave me 3 big pieces along with mashed potatoes and fresh carrots and green beans. Everything was awesome but I have to say, the Man out-ordered me with the Brasato he ordered. That's braised boneless short ribs in a wine and herb sauce also with mashed and fresh veggies. Staff was on it because it got slammed. They were all nice and attentive. Food was out in good time. Always highly recommend this place and glad we found it.

Came here for the first time on Mother's Day, truth was; I was a little disappointed. I had been wanting to come here for awhile, specifically to try their linguine which I saw in some magazine. The atmosphere itself is very nice and the service was great. The linguine though not so much. Wouldn't mind coming here again only to try something else and give this place a second chance. And enjoy a glass of wine of course ;)

This strip mall restaurant is somewhat of a local favorite. However, I recommend you eat somewhere else. True, the help is very friendly and it feels pretty comfortable half full of people. But the food poorly prepared with ingredients of questionable freshness and using over-the-top creamy rich sauces. I had the $8 "Insalata Cesare" (classic Caesar salad), modest size, slim on dressing and two croutons. Then I picked from 19 main course dishes, the $15 "Rigatoni" (tube pasta, roasted chicken, pancetta, oven roasted tomato, gorgonzola cream sauce). Very poorly executed, several small (1/8 inch) cubes of chicken, sun dried tomato strips I could not chow, and the questionable sauce. I ate about a third of the pasta, pulling the tomato strips out of my mouth, looking for the chicken, alternately too cold on the top of the dish and too hot on the bottom. My worst experience from visiting Antica Trattoria came about three hours later when my stomach twisted and kept me up for several hours. Let me save you the visit to confirm this; just find somewhere else to eat.

Really great place! We had the brie croccante, malfatti and capellini. Everything was delicious EXCEPT for my girlfriend's cosmopolitan. They put a cherry in the bottom, and it had zero lime acidity, wth?! Whatever it was, it definitely wasn't a cosmo and tasted kinda nasty, like it was a ghetto fake juice mix (really, if you're a decent Italian food place, you should have actual cranberry juice and limes behind the bar to make an actual cosmo) but we didn't want to fuss over it since we were already there with a Groupon haha. The food was seriously delicious (fried bried?! Walnut and gorgonzola cream sauce?! Be still my heart.), and our server was awesome. He joked that he wasn't a very good waiter and gave us a free half-glass of riesling each to finish our meal just because. Definitely upped his tip with that awesome touch, as I've never had anyone give out free alcohol before.

I was shocked to see that Anitica did not have a complete 5 star perfect rating all around! Anything less than a 5 star rating for this place is complete injustice! The food is amazing, the service is fantastic and the people here make you feel like family. I've been coming here now for almost two years. Chef Franco is unlike any chef I've seen. He's involved with the customers and makes sure all your needs are met. You should spark up a conversation with him. You will be entertained. I've become a fan of Brussels sprouts thanks to the crispy Brussels sprouts with bacon, Parmesan cheese and balsamic glaze. Yummy! You should try it when you come. And there's an added bonus here and his name is Rosario! He's a talented Italian singer disguised as a server! So pleasant and wonderful!

Always enjoy dining here when visiting San Diego. In an unassuming location, this is a neighborhood gem. Good wine list, excellent wait staff, and fabulous food. Antica Trattoria has it all. Try it. You won't be disappointed!

We ate here tonight on a Living Social ($15 for $30). WOW....this place is pretty much sheer perfection! Surprising to have such an upscale restaurant in a strip shopping mall in La Mesa. However, DO not get it twisted. THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Their bread with the olive oil/balsamic dipping sauce is incredible. Split a caesar salad with hubby. One of the best I've had. Hubby had the fettucini with salmon and shrimp. Scrumptious! I got the chicken dish with the fontina cheese and mashed potatoes. Honestly...amazing! Our server (wish I had asked his name) was phenomenol....as was the young kid busing tables. Outstanding....all around! Can't wait to go back again! Whatever you guys are doing, keep on doin it cuz it just ROCKS!! P.S. HIGHLY recommend you make a reservation. We went early but I DO know they get mobbed -- especially on the weekend nights!!

Ive been coming here for the last few years and I love the service here and the quality of the food. It is also obvious that the cooks can cook! Ive had their pastas and they are delicious but in my opinion as a cook myself, they excel in the way they cook there sauces and meats. When u ask for medium rare thats what you get. The best pork loin I've ever had and the best ribeye besides mine was prepared at Antica Trattoria! The quality of the ingredients is obvious. Ive reviewed here before and my biggest complaint was it being too pricy for it being in its location. I now take it back because if that were the case, some of those restaurants in Little Italy should be slashing prices! Since then, the owner has put them on Groupon and Amazon Local for 50% off! Ive knocked them for there location but now I embrace it for what it is . This place is a hidden gem hidden in the hills and trees of La Mesa! Hidden away from the tourists! After my first post months ago, the owner contacted me because he was genuinely concerned with the 3 star review. I thought that was awesome on his part that the opinion of his customers mattered so much to him. If you have never been here, this place is a must. It isnt your classic spaghetti and meatballs Italian food but more on the real Italian! Great for a date night!

What a charming place! Never would have expected to find such a quaint little place in a strip mall in La Mesa. It is very cozy and inviting, and then there's the food... very high quality, good sized portions, and delicious! Will definitely go back!

The food and the service were amazing. We live 5 min from here, but we had no idea there was such a high quality Italian restaurant,,,, in a shopping strip, until yesterday. I got groupon, ($15 for $30), and my husband and I both tried Fettuccini with shrimp in creamy brandy lobster sauce. It was so heavenly. I can eat that every single day. The noodle was perfect al dente. The sauce had right amount of salt. The shrimps were very big and juicy. You can tell they were very fresh! The portion was just right amount. Not too much. not too little. You don't want to come here with "casual" attire. Most customers were nicely dressed up. My husband wore T-shirt and camo pants since he was working on the house project right before the dinner, and he was definitely under dressed!! I have to come back to explore more items on the menu!

I can't even begin to tell you the absolute pleasure- nay the PRIVILEGE it is to eat here. Locale: Restaurant is a bit on the small side, but the tables are amply spaced apart so you're never eating with a stranger in your lap or a drunken couple passive aggressively fighting in your ear. Super clean, beautiful tables. The lighting is perfect- they're dim but not to the point where you have to read the menu by the light of your cell phone. Bathroom is immaculate and clean. Waitstaff Shout out to our AMAZING server CJ. Prompt, polite, knowledgable. He was wonderful. Both times we've been here we were seated almost immediately. We had drinks within minutes of seating. Any questions we had were met with thoughtful answers and excellent recommendations. Also our food runner Ivan- super polite and excellent attention to detail. Rearranged our half-finished appetizers when our entrees came out without the awkward shuffle every restaurant patron knows. That alone was awesome. Never had an empty water glass and table was cleared immediately. Food My husband and I have been here twice and everything we've had has been excellent. Hot, beautifully cooked, and so tasty. I'm a seafood dish lover and they surpassed my expectations. On a side note the second time we came in we brought in a bottle of wine and were charged an extremely reasonable corkage fee (HALF of what we've been charged in other places). It was a special occasion and we very much appreciated the ability to bring in one of our special wines. We're both college students so we like cheap food like any other but this place's prices are right on par with the quality of the food. To sum it up this place is for seriously the bomb dot com. It is Michael Phelps in the Italian Food Olympics.

Used our Groupon!! Our favorite clams and mussels and the best in town! They are sauteed with garlic, roasted red bell pepper in a champagne saffron broth....Ohhh Yeahh!! The short ribs were topped with a yummy brown sauce and it came with polenta and veggies. The sea bass was topped with mushrooms and shrimp, definitely a show stopper. Check In on Yelp and get a free tiramisu! The prices here are very reasonable, the most expensive entree is $24. Perfect place to use a Groupon!!

This was our first visit here for our anniversary, but we will definitely be back! Service was exemplary - even gave us a candle-lit ice cream for the celebration - support staff also equal to the task by keeping water glasses full and whatever else we needed. Food was incredible - I had the malfati (spinach and cheese filled ravioli, sausage, porcini mushroom saucy goodness); my husband, the cavatelli (prosciutto, artichokes, and green olives in a pool of creamy goodness). The ambience is comfortable, rustic Italian - just the way we like it.

A beautiful little gem! The food is outstanding, but if you're a stickler for great service, this is the place for you!! Even when crowded, the staff makes you feel special and well taken care of. The food is simply brilliant! The ambiance is perfection.

I was looking forward to this dinner, the other yelp reviews really set this up as a wonderful place to dine....once again I was not disappointed. We dined here last night (2/15) as part of our Vday celebration, the place is intimate and a perfect setting for a date. My review is simple, this place offers great food & great service. We arrived just an hour before closing but this was not a problem, the staff was gracious & we did not feel rushed. Food: The complimentary bread was delicious. We also ordered the mixed appetizer which included fried calamari & fish. The appetizer was good, not extraordinary but good. What did merit the 5 stars was my braised short ribs. Wow!!! The meat was like butter, it just melted in my tongue & exploded into a million little balls of flavor. I will come back for this dish. Not only was it amazing but the presentation was just as wonderful. My bf had the seafood pasta, he's a bit of a food snob as he's worked in the business since he was 16, needless to say he's tough to impress but that is exactly what happened. He ate everything on his plate. I kinda wish I tried it but I was too busy devouring my meat. Staff: Very gracious & attentive....thank you for such a wonderful dining experience. One thing...the prices are excellent & definitely competitive with similar restaurants. I was astounded by the two reviews complaining about their prices, one yelper (Jasmine) complained about her $91 tab....my question is....where do you typically dine???? Jack in the box????? Del Taco???? A $91 tab for "4 entrees & 2 alcoholic drinks" is more than reasonable!!!!! You are getting an astounding meal at a terrific location! So to those yelpers reading this, please disregard the ignorant comments about their prices, I think they were written by people accustomed to solely eating fast food :-)

I've been eating here for over 6 years & it's been love at first bite ever since. The food is beyond amazing. I think my husband & I have eaten everything on the menu. I highly recommend trying it all. My daughter's favorite is the Carpaccio. Franco & the entire staff feel like family to us. If you haven't tried this restaurant, you are definitely missing out on fabulous Italian food.

Generous service and had two competing hostess, yet both were attentive. Had a dinner date with my uncle and he ordered the stuffed mushrooms as an app. As an entree he got lasagna, which is always fulfilling and meat hearty! I opted for the short rib entree and the meat was so soft and succulent. I would go back again when I'm in San Diego again.

Had a Groupon for $30 and tried this new spot for me on a Friday night dinner with a dear friend. Had 6pm reservations and were seated/ right away. Shared a tasty Gorgonzola, pear, walnut, spring salad, and a very nice Washington Chard. Think it was called "O". My linguine, smoked salmon, shrimp with lobster cream sauce was yummy. My good friend Jackie, had the spinach ravioli with light cream sauce and she loved hers too! Finished with sharing Creme Brûlée and a glass of Cab. Wine list was good, but could use a few more Reds by the glass. Only 2 Cabs by glass to pick from. Service was excellent. Not rushed even though they were pretty busy! All in all, great meal and will be back again with or without a Groupon!

Very happy! Went there yesterday for my birthday and the food was delecious! I got the veal top with proscutto in a sage and white wine sauce! After reading some of the other reviews i was ready for long wait times, the waiter was very on top of things. This probably was due to me eating on a Tuesday and not the weekend. It's hard to go to a new resturant for your birthday and I was more than satisfied with my choice! I'll say arrivederci (until we meet again)

Came here for lunch with a UT San Diego coupon. It is a very nice and cozy environment. Very comfortable and warm decor. We ordered the veal carciofi which is a veal with mashed potatoes and vegetables including artichokes. The veal was sliced very thin too thin for my tastes in a light wine sauce but the dish was very good as my partner enjoyed it very much. I ordered the linguine pescatore which is linguine with mussels, clams, calamari, and shrimp in a light shrimp stock with tomatoes. I enjoyed this a lot. I asked for no calamari and they gave me a few more mussels. Nice flavor on the sauce and nothing was over cooked. Portion size was decent but I am a big eater so I would have liked a little more seafood. After the meal the owner asked us how the meal was. I told him that I enjoyed it and that this my first time. He proceeded to offer me a free dessert! The dessert was excellent it was a chocolate layer cake. He asked me if I was the one that ordered the linguine pescatore without the calamari. I said yes it was me and explained to him that I do enjoy calamari but every place in San Diego that I have ordered this it was over cooked and rubbery. He said that his calamari they put it in at the end of the cook and he nodded in agreement that many places over cook calamari. The service was great as Melani was very accommodating and always made sure that everyone was going well. I enjoyed this place and will come back.

We go out to eat ALOT and we don't mind spending coin on good food. Gotta tell you - this is one of those little secrets that you normally wouldn't find because it's not in a location that is really visible when you're just driving by. Our friends live in the area and turned us on to the place. Was there last Saturday night. Our server, Joe, was on top of his GAME. He was friendly, knew the menu inside and out, helpful and the one thing I really appreciate - there wasn't a MOMENT that we needed anything or had to ask for anything because it was just THERE. Service was top notch. Our food was DELICIOUS. Husband had veal scallopini, friends had two amazing entrees. I had to be a pain in the rear though - didn't see something that struck me so I asked if there was a possibility that someone could make me spaghetti and white clam sauce (wasn't on the menu and it's one of my favorites if someone prepares it correctly). NO PROBLEM. It was one of the best clam sauces I've ever had (and that is saying something...trust me). Bread was delicious, dessert was delicious. There is not ONE thing I could complain about. We will be going there again...and again...and again. I was seriously happy with the entire experience and even though it's a bit of a drive for us, we will gladly make the trip when we want a really good meal with great service. THANK YOU GUYS.

I have been coming to this little restaurant for over a decade and have enjoyed it close to 50 times with friends, family and business guests. It just doesn't get better than this for fine Italian food in San Diego. There is some competition in Hillcrest and downtown but not Little Italy. Whether its a salad, appetizer or main course, the food is always flavorful and served fresh at the correct temperature. Once you get past the strip mall front you could be in Italy. The same folks are always working there and they are friendly, helpful and fun. When you factor in the reasonable cost it simply cannot be beat!

Came here last night for my birthday and I will definitely be coming back! Ordered: Bruschetta- not the best I've had, but still pretty solid. The eggplant was a nice touch. Fettucine Lago- A little too creamy for my taste (probably should have asked for it with a tomato-based sauce instead). Came with a few giant shrimp and lots of salmon. Cavatelli with Eggplant- didn't try it, but looked delicious. Would probably try that next time Sea Bass: Looked delicious too. Or maybe I would order this next time Tiramisu- Used my Yelp check-in to get it for free. Hard to go wrong with Tiramisu in my opinion and this one was excellent. So much espresso, so delicious! Pros: We came when it wasn't crowded, so the service was good but not overdone. Liked the ambience except the coat of arms display seems out of place. I only noticed because it was right in front of me. Solid Italian food. Cons: Wasn't a big fan of my dish, but I definitely see enough dishes that would be worth a return trip (see: what everyone else ordered)

Stay away from this restaurant, the food is too good and it is getting discovered and becoming busy. You really want to eat somewhere else... anywhere. Please!

The best kept secret in La Mesa. You walk through the doors and your transported to another world. The service is beyond outstanding. You're family. You can tell the chef cooks with love, you can taste it. He cooks as if he's cooking each dish for friends or family at home. Everything about this place is wonderful! There's not just 1 dish I can recommend because, no exaggeration EVERYTHING on the menu is delicious. The bruschetta is the best I've ever had! Great wine selection, I could go on and on. No lie, I'm here every other day lol.

I have had dinner here at Antica Trattoria now 5 times and the food , the service and the staff just seem to get better. I took my girlfriend there for dinner last night for her birthday Francesco the owner took exceptional care of us, he made a special dinner for my girlfriend and I, it wasn't even on the menu the food was out of this world it was so good I can't remember having Italian food that delicious. Also the bartender there came to our table with a small slice of dessert and sang beautifully happy birthday to my girlfriend in Italian she told me it was a wonderful evening. I am a Foodie I go out to eat a'lot and this place is high on my list check it out you will be impressed

Recently visited for first time using Amazon Locale coupon. Food and service were very good. However I have one major complaint. I ordered the Butternut Squash ravioli with a sage butter sauce. The flavor was great. Granted it was a vegetarian dish (no meat at least) and the price was $15. However I received a total of 7 ravioli. That's over $2 per ravioli. I do not have a huge appetite but I was expecting at least 12. These were not overstuffed ravioli by any means. To honest the ones that Costco carries around the Holidays are just as tasty.

I went there last night with a group of 6 ladies, one who goes often with her husband. The restaurant itself is so relaxing and inviting. Love the décor. We started with bruschetta, really delicious, full of flavor. I ordered the Penne with the short ribs...omg.. so good. Penne cooked just right. Short ribs amazing and tender. My friends all remarked that their dishes tasted fresh and light. Truly a highlight was when our server, Rosario, sang Happy Birthday to one of our friends in Italian! Wonderful voice and made the evening so special. I am anxious to bring my husband here soon! Great food, great service.

The service was very good and she was very attentive. However the food was below par. We got the stuffed mushroom appetizer- it was like $13 for 5 small regular mushrooms. Nothing special. $8 for a Cesar salad that was barely dressed and was all huge hearts of romaine, not leafs. We also got the veal saltimboca - it was so thin it probably was probably like 2mm thick and you could barely even see any prosciutto. It tasted okay but it is not worth downtown prices for $23. Anyway the lower rating is because it is waaay overpriced for less than average food- even with a Groupon.

I meant to write this before. Francesco contacted me shortly after my review and he wanted to treat us to a dinner and make up for our previous dinner. We didn't take him up on it because we felt it would be weird to sit through that dinner but I do commend him for reading reviews and trying to better our experience. That shows good customer service and that he cares about his restaurant.

I have been here twice and very impressed with the food, service, and atmosphere. The only complaint is when it gets full of people which it does, it can be so noisy it is hard to hear a conversation. The short rib is fantastic!

This fantastic restaurant, in a strip mall near San Diego State University, is a hidden gem. The decor is charming and the tables are not crowded together (although more comfortable chairs with a little lower back support would be appreciated). The staff is friendly, helpful, and efficient, and never make you feel rushed. Then there's the food. It's sublime. It's perfect. The papardelle with Italian sausage, asparagus, and sun-dried tomatoes in a saffron cream sauce is one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted, with a perfect texture on their house-made pasta, a delicately seasoned, perfectly creamy sauce that isn't heavy, and just the right amount of tomatoes, basil, and asparagus. The fettucine with smoked salmon and shrimp in brandy lobster sauce is equally marvelous; again, the perfect textures, and just the right balance. The salads are well prepared, the bread is fresh and delicious, and the tiramisu is light and fluffy. My husband and I plan to go back regularly so we can try more of their offerings, although it will be VERY difficult not to order the papardelle, which I've done every time I've gone there so far. This restaurant gives you a VERY fine dining experience at very reasonable prices.

The good...it is probably the best Italian food in East County. The bad....it is in East County. This is a nice romantic place to take your significant other if for some reason you find yourself by the 125 and the 8. Authentic food with an authentic feel....make sure you try some of the appetizers...like the carpaccio...muah. They also have a nice wine selection...if you're into that sort of thing....and great dinner specials. bring your wallet because it isn't cheap...well at least by EC standards....for anywhere else it is about on par as far as price. Not good enough to travel to EC..but great if you're already there.

The ambiance of this place is wonderful! Although the location isn't the best (it's in a strip-mall), the restaurant is an excellent date spot. It's very pretty and the lighting is just right. :) The food was excellent! I had a seafood pasta and loved it. I could tell the seafood and pasta was fresh--nothing had been sitting in the kitchen long. The service was superb! We had one of the best servers I've ever had. She was attentive but not annoying and even told me about the Yelp check-in to get a free piece of tiramisu! The place was really busy, so I'd suggest making a reservation on the weekends. Thank you for a wonderful experience! I'll be back.

My wife and I stopped here last minute without a reservation for Dinner on a Friday night without ever going here before. There was no wait and we were quickly seated and greeted by our waiter. The atmosphere of this place is very nice. We ordered the calamari & shrimp appetizer which might have been my favorite dish I had from there. So good! The Penne pasta and Chicken Marsala were both delicious. And to top it off, the Creme Brule was awesome. The service was great too. We had a very positive experience there.

Family brought me here for my birthday dinner in August 2011. We were a party of 4 adults and had a wonderful time. The food is excellent as is the service. We had the Chef's mix antipasti (fried calamari, grilled veggies, salame, etc. Good starter since it offers something for everyone. Also worth having as a starer is the risotto al funghi. Awesome. Main courses were delicious: Maiale alla Piemontese ...Roasted pork loin with fresh herbs, merlot reduction served on whipped potatoes with beans and carrots, lasagna, and two orders of lamb osso buco atop risotto. To finish everything off: tasty tiramisu. This is a wonderful place and since my favorite Santee restaurant has closed we'll be putting Antica Trattoria into the rotation for events outside of birthday dinners.

This place is the best Italian food restaurant we have ever eaten at. Always fresh and tasty. We have been here many times and have never been disappointed. I always order something different just to taste all the delicious offerings. It starts off with fresh, hot bread with an EEVO and Balsamic vinegar dip. My girl and I split a delicious Caesar salad and then decide what we want. My girl had the day's special. It was Osso Bucca with risotto and it was divine! I had the linguine which has mussels, clams, shrimp and calamari in a tomato sauce with linguine pasta. Perfect. The service is always good. I highly recommend Antica Trattoria to all my friends and when they have a Groupon or Living Social deal it makes it even better!

This place is amazing! What a gem! We tried this for the first time last night and we had AMAZING service and FABULOUS food! I can't wait to go back again! You will feel like you are eating at your families restaurant, they are so friendly and welcoming! I recommend this restaurant to everyone - make sure to have the Tiramasu, it is amazing! If you can't decide what to order, let the chef choose for you, you will not be disappointed!

Holy cow. Omg. Wow. Omg. ... Pretty much all my husband and I kept saying as we ate here. The food is AMAZING!! Truly -- just incredible. Compliments to the Chef!! If we weren't already married, I'd invite you to the wedding. You are truly gifted in the culinary arts. The atmosphere here is also adorably quaint like old Italy, but it's hard to get past just the sheer amazing-ness of the food. I want a buffet-style experience to try every single item on the menu!

We went last Sunday the 15th of December. It was my wife's birthday. We called and made a reservation for four. When we arrived, our table was ready, the staff were very helpful. We has few appetizers which they were delious then I had the rib eye !!! Wow ... It was cooked to perfection. The sauce had so much flavor, I can easily say that it was by far the best I've ever had. My wife had the fish which she finished the whole thing " which I've never seen her done that before". We're taking our friends next week for dinner. We can't wait to have them try the food. I would give it five stars, thank you got making my wife's birthday. See you next week.

My spouse and I had dinner at the Antica on Monday evening, August 27th and were extremely pleased with the entire evening. We began with glasses of wine, followed by the mozzarella caprese. Just enough for a shared antipasti. Entrees of flatiron steak and veal parmigiana followed. They were prepared as we requested and were delicious. A cannoli for dessert topped off the meal. We've been coming to the Antica since it opened and have never been disappointed with the service or the meals, from start to finish. Even though it was a Groupon night for many, service was excellent, unhurried, but attentive. It's nice to have the chef, Franco Basile, visiting tables to ensure that the patrons were satisfied with the food and service. Unquestionably, we recommend the Antica Trattoria if you have a taste for good Italian food, good service and an enjoyable evening.

The food was good and reasonably priced. The ambience was comfortable and inviting. But the best thing about this experience was the service. Never neglected or ignored, but we also weren't hurried or rushed with people hovering over us. Andrea, our server, was by far the single best food service professional I have had the pleasure of working with. He sets the bar for five star service.

Planned ahead and made a reservation because I know how busy this place can be only to be left standing in the doorway for 15 mins until a table cleared out. I would give the restaurant ambiance and food 4 stars but the hostess needs to get on board. She might as well have been working at the local diner as she chewed her gum. She never apologized and just said "it would be a few minutes until the people left because they had been there since 4:30p". It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth when you make resvns and then have to wait. Would have appreciated a free glass of wine while we waited. Server got the job done but no frills.

I LOVED this place! It was kind of weird that it was located in a strip mall, but it inside it has a great vibe, and the owner is CLEARLY a true Italian. The food was wonderful, and they had great gluten free options which is a must for half of my family. This is the only place I'd go for Italian near San Diego State. I'm almost glad that I was only there on vacation, because I would end up eating there ALL the time.

I *really* hesitated to review this place because it's one of my favorites - a neighborhood gem - and I don't want it to get more crowded than it already does. Nevertheless, the utilitarian in me says: GO. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is cozy, friendly, and yes, crowded. The salads are crispy fresh (the Antica, with walnuts and gorgonzola) is my favorite. Lightly (i.e., appropriately) dressed salads are harder and harder to find, but this one nails it. I usually get either the risotto or lasagna, both of which are superb. The risotto, with the creaminess from the starch in the arborio, the earthiness of the mushrooms, and the salty pungency from the parm, is the perfect dish on a chilly evening, exuding warmth and lusciousness. The lasagna is rich but not off-puttingly so, and a portion just large enough that you'll finish it without guilt but leave completely satiated. The staff are first-rate: professionals who take pride in the service they offer and the food they present. You will need reservations if you intend to go on a Friday or Saturday night, but if you go once, you'll go all the time.

I gave it four stars just because I reserve five stars for the ultimate in dining which includes a great view, valet parking, the works. But for a restaurant in a strip mall, wow, this one rocks. We came with a voucher, otherwise I never would have known about this great restaurant. We drove from Del Mar and it was definitely worth it. The atmosphere was lovely, our waiter CJ was most efficient and pleasant, and the best part was the food...from the warm bread and dip to the cappellini with wild mushrooms, shrimp, tomatoes, and I ordered extra garlic, good move, and lobster sauce to the salmon which was cooked perfectly. The prices were right on target even without a voucher. I will definitely be back for more!

Was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant...it is inconspicuous in a strip mall. We went on a Thursday evening and it was pretty busy so you know people are there as repeat customers. The owner was very nice in offering to order a specia wine for my husband. The food was delicious and we would definitely go back again!

my favorite italian restaurant in san diego. god this place is amazing. owner is from sicily and it shows in the food. this place isn't some fancy fusion place, rather classic rustic dishes that you swear his great great grandmother is in the back making. keep it simple and keep it tasty. i'd give these guys 6 stars if i could.

Yummy Italian food in a strip mall in La Mesa? Whodathunk? Sis, her bf and I had dinner here last nite and it was super good! The risotto was very good - not at all gummy and my sis' mushroom ravioli was so rich and delish. The service was very nice and unobtrusive. Very reasonably priced too! There were some annoying East County types dining that were SUPER loud and it was quite drafty in there but don't let that scare you from checking this gem out! Go! Go! Go!

Papa T. is a damn picky eater. He only eats Chinese or steak... so for his birthday the boys decided to take him to Italian. =) Nothing else to add to... uh... the Foodslut's ( I feel goofy referring to him by that name) review but I have to add that this place is authentic. How do I know? Because we were the ONLY Chinese people there ( this is a variation of the white person test for authenticity - stuffwhitepeoplelike.wor… ) . Oh yeah, the waiters also had italian accents and looked like guidos/goombas.

Antica Trattoria is a great place for good Italian food, attentive service, an intimate yet casual atmosphere, and reasonable prices. THE PROS We eat out for the food, and their food is very good. They have a good wine selection but also feature a reasonable ($10) corkage fee, so bring your own wine if you have a decent bottle. Between my wife and I, we like it all (veal, sea food, pasta, etc.) and everything has been good or great. And, the service is generally attentive. THE CONS Most of the servers tend to have their own shtick. For some people, this works great. At times, I wish they'd be more focused on me as an individual patron rather than going through their routine. However, the service is always attentive. THE SKINNY Antica Trattoria is one of my favorite places in San Diego to enjoy a good meal and a nice bottle of wine. I never hesitate to take family or friends there.

I was pleasantly surprised. I read the reviews before going, and it was great. Not 5 star great, but it was really good. I got the risotto pecscatore: perfectly cooked risotto with buttery calamari, fish, muscles, clams and they didn't even overcook the shrimp! (apparently an impossible task for any restaurant I have ever been to.) The bruschetta appetizer is worth overlooking, just way too much pesto and tomato, but the bread they bring out with oil is an old school throwback to classic Italian home cooking. And it's the homely feeling that makes this place good. The wine list is nothing to write home about, being short, sweet and to the point with nothing but Napa and Italian wines (not saying that's a bad thing). Other than that the drinks came out quick and were refilled often. The waiter was nice, and even the chef came out and made rounds at the tables, always a good sign. To sum Antica up, I liked it, the portions are generous, the staff is nice and everything was cooked well. There were just a few tiny discretions I had. The bruschetta was piled way to high with toppings, the muscles tasted different, not a bad different, just different, and the creme brule didn't crack like fresh melted sugar does. It was obviously sitting out for a little, making the topping soggy, but I really didn't care, because the custard was lemony and very light. So for a reasonably priced Italian dinner in a cozy and friendly atmosphere, this is the spot. It ended up being about $25 per person. Beats the hell out of olive garden.

Great itailian food. When you're here you'll forget you're in La Mesa. With the authentic food and tuscan decor, you feel as if you are on a mini-vacation. The food was really good and the service is great. I can't attest to the crowds on the weekends or for normal dinner service, because my trip there was for a weekday lunch. I will report that when you are one of the only groups there you are served very quickly. I would definately go back. Check it out.

I have been here twice, both times the food was excellent. I love how everything is fresh and the atmosphere is a little elegant without being stuffy. We ate here for Valetine's Day last year and I had the heart shaped ravioli, yummy and festive. Also bought a Groupon last fall and had equally good service and food. They have a special for half priced bottles of wine on Mondays and Tuesdays that I definitely want to check out. Great addition to La Mesa, will definitely be back!

So I have lived a mile away from this restaurant for nine years and finally decided to try it after all the hype. Well...my whole being tried to like this restaurant. Arrival time 7pm Server approached our table 7:25 (why so long?) Drinks and appetizer ordered 7:28 Calamari appetizer served 7:33 (wow! the calamari was ready so quickly) Drinks Arrived 7:50 (pretty aggravated to have drinks show ~22 minutes later) Dinner arrived 8pm (not bad timing when it came to this) If you really pay attention, you will notice the calamari arrived within 5 minutes. Something should have triggered my attention at this point because it can't take 5 minutes to prepare fresh calamari and to serve it. This calamari tasted good but my hubby and I sure payed the price when we felt every symptom of food poisoning within hours of eating here. We sat very close to the kitchen and I could smell a fast-food joint type scent coming from this kitchen. I tried to enjoy it while I was there but the food poisoning wasn't fun. Sorry but I rather not go back... They need to have more servers and a better atmosphere.

Great pasta! Everything tastes really fresh and they have a nice selection of wine. I prefer to bring my own though (only $10 corkage fee). I would recommend reservations because it can get busy certain nights. I always like the pasta with eggplant and chicken. They have rotating specials (not on the menu) that are also delicious. Crab stuffed mushrooms are beautiful!

Disclaimer: this is one of my parents' favorite places, we went on Father's Day and my Dad paid, so I'm not allowed to say anything too bad about it. We had reservations for 6:30, but they had an unexpected number of walkins earlier (I guess they opened at 4:30) so it was 7:15 before we were seated. Then for the first half hour or so they were still pretty overwhelmed - water and bread took 20 minutes or so. The waiter, Ando, was animated and amusing and fairly difficult to understand. He has a great sense of humor though, and one of the reasons the 'rents like the place is the help is always over-friendly. The appetizer frito misto - fried calimari, shrimp and bits of artichoke with cream sauce, was great. Wine was swell, three of us somehow downed two bottles, and I know my Mom doesn't drink more than I do, at least when we're together. My lamb was tender, sauce was good, veggies were tasty enough that I ate them, which is saying a lot. Mom had Lasagna and shared, it was my favorite and I'm looking forward to having the rest for dinner tonight. My wife had farfalle mare - bowtie pasta with seafood, no complaints. And Dad had a big bowl of some sort of pasta I can't recall now, but he polished it off. Other than the slight annoyance of timing, understandable in a small place on a holiday evening, it was a fine dinner, and I'm certain we'll be back.

I was looking for a fancy joint to take family in the San Carlos area. This is probably the most upscale place I have found. Neat decor with wooden panels from wine crates on the walls. Menu is extensive, and features quite a few items I have never experienced before on an Italian menu. Definitely not a spaghetti and meatballs place. Really good service too. It's not a big place, so it fills up around 7. I would definitely go back.

My husband and I have gone here many, many times and it has been excellent every time! This is our go-to Italian restaurant. It doesn't look like much on the outside, as it is located in a La Mesa strip mall, but give it a chance and you won't be disappointed. The food here rivals the best Italian I had while in Italy. My favorite used to be the seafood risotto, although since I stopped eating seafood, I usually get the mushroom risotto or whatever vegetarian/vegan special they have that day. I think my husband has tried nearly every item on the menu and hasn't really ever complained. His absolute favorite is the Frittura Mista -- he often gets it as an entree rather than an appetizer. (The fried artichokes are amazing!) The bread is tasty and hot, and they have a really nice olive oil/vinegar/herb blend to dip it in. We usually eat the entire basket, and have to resist a second to save room for our entrees. The waitstaff is attentive without being overbearing, the bread is plentiful, and the water glasses are always filled without asking. If you ever need something, you never have to wait long for someone to pass by or come by and ask if you need anything. Four stars only because it gets really loud when the place is full. I suggest eating at off-peak hours if you don't a lot of like noise from other diners. If this place were located in Little Italy, it would be packed every night. But, I'm glad it's out in La Mesa since you never have to struggle to find parking, and can generally get a reservation whenever you want.

Great little place. I mostly enjoyed the atmosphere. My wife kept telling me that we should paint our walls the same color as theirs :D It has a nice Italian place feel to it, which is nice. The food was reasonably fast and tasty, probably not the best i've had but it's up there

This is the place I'd recommend for a birthday, graduation, new job, etc. It's a little upscale, but it's comfortable. The Italian waiters are cute and flirt with the female customers just enough to make you feel attended to, but not so obviously that it's creepy. The food is usually excellent--I've had several pasta dishes and am usually impressed. They don't overdo the sauces, as is all-too-common, with dishes with richer sauces. When I've gone for the specials like filet mignon with blue cheese, I'm always impressed. Yes, the prices are a bit like what you'd expect for a downtown restaurant, but if you live in East County and want something nice to take your lover to, what could be better?

All I can say is wow. My boyfriend and I stopped by this hidden gym during our road trip to San Diego. We were surprised by how delicious and fresh everything was not to mention the waiters were very fast and efficient. The Bruschetta was amazing, as well as the lasagna. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants authentic Italian food and a huge wine selection.

I was told multiple times to try this spot in our neighborhood. The food was good but the service was lacking, might have been because there was a big party getting a lot of attention. Beautiful setup, and clean appearance. Overall my favorite was the mojito and fresh baked bread.

Found this place through a Groupon add. What a find!!!!! There were not many patrons there when we went in but the place did not disappoint. I showed the maitre'd the groupon I had and silently waited to see if we got treated any differently due to it. Not in the least bit. The Menu had lots of variety, even my choosey husband was able to find something to get and enjoy. The servings are large so come with an appetite. The dish I got was absolutely delicious. I am very picky on my version of true authentic Italian food and this restraunt has quickly joined my top 5 Italian restraunts outside of Italy itself. The service was fantastic. I have heard horror stories of people being treated crappy due to having coupons/groupons and this place is not one of them. They were very attentive and gracious. Because we enjoyed the place (food and service included) we spent much more than what our groupon was for. And we would go and do it again. My recommendations do not come easily and I highly recommend this place! If you are in the mood for some fantastic authentic Italian food, with an Italian ambience, this is the place for you to go!!! Enjoy!

One of my favorite restaurants! You know how some restaurants serve boring, stale bread to start the meal....just because someone told them they had to serve bread? Antica Trattoria is not one of those places! I could easily come here every night and just eat the bread for dinner but the rest of the menu beckons to me! I recommend that you start with the Burrata Insalate or Carpaccio Alla Rossini and linger over that with a nice glass of wine. Move on to the Calamari E Gamberi Piccata (absolutely the best I've ever had) but save room for the cannolli.... definitely worth the calories! The staff is attentive, the chef, Franco, is talented and though the place gets busy during the evening, it's a wonderful experience. You deserve a treat today, go to Antica!

Came here for my boy's birthday on a groupon. Best decision ever. Food was so so good, and the ambiance was awesome. The waiter and busboy were so amazingly attentive, and I cannot rave enough about the food. I've been sending so much business their way! I recommend the calamari steak, or the pork chop. We shared both and wow they were so good. I would love to go back, maybe for the anniversary, it's coming up soon. Also the yelp check in deal is great, we had a delicious tiramisu to end a perfect meal.

I wish there was a 3 1/2 star option.. I don't think this is what I normally call a 4 star restaurant, but I've never had a bad experience here. I've now eaten here 3 times, and every time the food was very good.

The best little place tucked into a strip mall in La Mesa. My hubby stated tonight (our second visit), "Apparently it's impossible to get a bad meal here." I couldn't agree more. The portion sizes are perfect, the food is fresh, authentic, and delectable, the wine selections are superb (and decently priced), and the atmosphere is pleasant. The waitstaff is very friendly. This has place quickly become a favorite for date night. I do recommend making a reservation, though. Other people in the community must know how good it is and it always seems to be packed.

I'm not sure I love this place. We got a Sign on San Diego deal with $35 off our meal. It would be so easy to be biased and go along with the 4-5 star ratings other Yelpers have given but I can't. Here's why... First of all, I'm glad I made a reservation for a Saturday 7pm dinner. When we arrived at the restaurant, it was quite full. We quickly noticed that they seem to neglect those that enter the restaurant. When the restaurant is full of guests and the waiters are running around, there's no one left to take care of the guests waiting by the door. If I wasn't holding on to the deal voucher, we would've walked out the door and given another restaurant our business. It took almost 10 minutes for a waiter to acknowledge us and another group waiting at the front. By that time, a couple who had entered couldn't wait and left. After that, it took another 5-7 minutes for us to sit down at a so-called "reserved" table. That's a little too long to wait, especially with a reservation. They really need to manage the front of house better. Needless to say, things got a little better after that. Our waitress was really friendly and attentive. Even though she apologized for the wait, it still doesn't change my opinion that even someone like the busser could take care of guests coming through the door if completely necessary. For dinner, we were served a tasty bread basket with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We ordered the following: *Appetizer - Frittura Mista (fried shrimp, calamari and artichoke with garlic sauce): A rather average tasting dish. Can't say it was the best I've ever tasted but it was filling. The garlic sauce wasn't very garlicky so that was okay. * Saltimbocca alla Romana (veal scallopini with prosciutto): As I write this review, I find out that my dining buddy thought the veal was chicken. I don't blame him. Both our veal dishes did look like we were served flattened chicken. Nonetheless, this dish wasn't too bad. * Vitello ai porcini (veal scallopini with porcini mushroom sauce): My dining buddy claimed that my dish tasted like Chinese food. That's actually quite accurate. The veal had a sort of spongy tenderness which I found kind of weird on the first few bites but it still went well with the porcini. The garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables were also a good complement to the veal. Someone forgot to mash all my potatoes as I found a big slice hiding under the mashed ones. *Tiramisu: Made in-house. Delicious! Saved the best for last. The interior of the restaurant looks better than the posted photos and it has much better ambience once seated. I think the colour on the plates sort of downgrade the entrees. Feels like I ate at home with my department store dish ware. Not that it's a bad thing but the fact that I feel like the dishes were something I could cook means I only had an average experience... not that my cooking is better but I expect a little better when I eat out.

We came to this restaurant to celebrate a recent promotion. It was absolutely delicious we started with a stuffed mushroom with lobster. I had the Capellini Fiesole that included angel hair pasta with shrimp, shitake mushroom and tomato in a Pinot Grigio sauce I added some sun dried tomatoes--and it was absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the Linguine Pescatore that included mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp, fresh herbs in light tomato sauce. Everything was cooked perfectly to order and the service was terrific. We will definitely be returning -hopefully on a Tuesday again to get 50% off a bottle of wine!

No, No, No... I do not understand the previous reviews. This place is no where near 4 or 5 stars, even we if grade on the curve for eateries in San Diego. Here is my take based on our experience: 1) Food really bad to edible 2) Service tolerable to irritating 3) Way overpriced We had the following: 1) Fried Calamari, Shrimp appetizer - Awful, cheap tough calamari rings and shrimp that should have been thrown out, frying doesnt solve everything. Thin cheap calamari inevitably will get tough when frying to achieve a crispy shell. 2) Insalate Venere - decent, greens no obvious decaying vegetation. The small dollop of goat cheese was outstanding the pears were edible and the candied pecans/walnuts were ok and the dressing ok. 3) Osso Bucco w/risotto was ok, the sauce was watery and the risotto was not creamy but tasted like Uncle Ben's in watery sauce. The best Osso Bucco I have ever had was at Bon Appetito in downtown. 4) Halibut special.- Halibut was definitely overcooked and tough. Probably was cooked from a frozen state in a microwave (my guess). 5) Lobster Raviolo - Just plain bad, all around. Not worth it even if it were free. This seemed liked it was thought up for someone who has no teeth and no tasted buds. 6) Cannoli - Terrible - Hard tough shell and basically a pure sugar filling. Probably a cannoli that is purchased and not made in house. Cannoli is suppose to be a crisp tender pastry shell filled with a rich sweetented/flavored cheese filling, ricotta or in some cases marscapone. 7) Tiramisu - This was actually pretty good. This place is small and on a busy night expect to be very close to others if your party is between 2-4. We were next to 2 parties of 2 and I actually thought they were a party of 4 that was how close they were. I honestly dont understand why this place is so busy, we went on a Saturday night at around 6/7 and the place was packed. Overall conclusion, way overpriced, we spent $150+ for a party of 3, the service was "C" and the food was a "D". The saving grace was the Tiramisu and maybe the salad. Our server was well...it was busy...we have definitely had worse service, ok maybe the service was C+ or a B-. My opinion, use better ingredients, better cooking methods and ensure that customers get the attention they need especially when it is busy. We will not be going back.

Great Italian food. Had the rack of lamb, wife had a pasta dish, we both loved out food, and it has a wonderful ambiance, after you enter you completely forget your in a strip mall. Great food, great staff, warm and inviting atmosphere. We will defiantly be coming back.

I live in Hillcrest which has a plethora of Italian joints. This beats them all. I'm willing to drive to La Mesa (admittedly only 15 minutes) for their food. The food is the best I've had for Italian in San Diego, and the service is good and friendly. Not a high end place, just a very friendly one with excellent food and reasonable corkage.

Horrible service, good food. Somehow I don't think my review is going to sway many people based on the number of customers on a Tuesday night this week. Probably because there aren't that many choices in the area (we were meeting relatives who lived near) and the food is good. BUT - the service was as bad as we've experienced in a long, long time starting from the inordinate time it took our server to even take our drink order. When he finally came back it after giving us the menus it was like he didn't know why he was there. Drinks came....after a while and then the food (we were smart enough to order both at the same time but it still took a long time). No checking in to see how things were going and no chance to order another glass of wine. Took forever !!!! to get our check and when it came he had made a huge mistake in our favor! We finally flagged him down and we wondered why we did based on his lack of response. We'll never go back - just not worth it even for the good food.

Pretty decent Italian food in a strip mall in the Lake Murray area. A step or two above a family restaurant but not quite fine dining. Prices are moderate and the wine list is decent. All in all a gem of a little restaurant.

My husband and I live in San Carlos, and this is our favorite place when we want to have a great meal close to home. We love when we see the Chef's Special advertised in our local paper, which as of this writing is 62.00 and includes two salads, two entrees a full bottle of wine and chefs pick for dessert. Any two salads and any two entrees on the menu-not just a few selections. The food is very fresh and so good. The salads are cold and crisp, on cold plates, and not dripping in dressing. The pastas are cooked to perfection, not overcooked, and of all I've tried I can't pick a favorite-they are all that good (however, the penne with shredded short ribs and goat cheese is one of my favs). There is usually a good dinner crowd, so I would suggest reservations. They are located in a strip mall type area but don't be put off-the food will keep you coming back for more!

My husband's and my favorite restaurant! There's never a question on date night-the answer is always "Antica." The food is authentic, delicious and is incomparable to other Italian restaurants. Every meal I've ordered (and I've tasted almost the entire menu) has been prepared accurately, is fresh, and is overall wonderful. You can see the chef cooking from the dining area, leaving no questions about the quality of your meal. The service is wonderful; the atmosphere is peaceful and homey. Bye-bye Olive Garden! : ) Oh! And be sure to check out their other restaurant Origano, in Hillcrest-also delish!

Yes, a solid Italian food, they also bake their own bread - nice and crusty. Barely any customers - the place is expensive especially for a business in a La Mesa area. You can get the same quality food in any Italian restaurant in Downtown for the same price.

Antica is a really good neighborhood Italian place. The menu is much more typical of a real restaurant in Italy than a red sauce/checked tablecloth spot. It appears to be a small, locally owned business, with attentive, professional service and a nice atmosphere. I'd suggest sticking with meat and pasta rather than fish, based on our small sample of 3 dishes.

3.5 stars. Good food in El Cajon? C'mon now! There's a reason why I tell people I grew up in the shit hole- armpit of San Diego. Not only did we lack a decent education (El Cajon Valley is the mecca for gangbangers like Monterey Park is the mecca for Chinese), we also lack a demographics that would pay over 5.99 for a meal. Lucky for us, the slut family is finally doing well enough now to afford more than a 5.99 meal. And last night, for the father's bday, we went big.....no, not more AYCE Chinese buffet...no, not even claim jumpers...we're rolling...and rolling big...ITALIAN! The lobster ravioli was a huge hit. Usually places cheap out in the lobster stuff...I tasted the crispness of that delicious creature. The taste of the veal scappolini made me think..."if eating veal is inhumane...then please call me a fucking beast". It was delicious...and devoured family style like a bowl of guacamole at a Superbowl party. And lets not forget the appetizer sampler. It fed 8. For 12.99. My dad grinned. Enough said right? or unsaid. The dessert and service was a bit weak. I can certainly understand since there was a huge line waiting...here's, a tip...they take reservations....make one. The Slut family thoroughly enjoyed. My dad kept calculating and telling my mom how this is better pricing than eating Chinese food. Make way...the Slut family is moving up the food chain.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in San Diego because it's so little and unassuming, but the food is fantastic!! I have tried many many things, and have yet to be disappointed. The lasagna is some of the best I've ever had, the seafood is all great, the specials are always really yummy. I just love it! The service is always very friendly, and the waiter always remembers us even though we will go months between visits sometimes. It's just a great little place, and the food is very fresh and authentic. One of my favorite little hidden gems in San Diego.

If you like snooty "holier than thou" service this place is for you. I bought a groupon from this place (because hi, who doesn't like a discount?) and when my boyfriend went to pick up the takeout they treated him like he was a pauper. If you're so above us then don't put out a discount on the internet and move your holy business downtown.

Love it here! Just enjoyed my third trip to Antica and can't wait to return. We had calamari fritti - melt-in-your-mouth tender, Polenta Souffle - very tasty and a yummy salad - can't remember name but included gorgonzola, pears and walnuts. Our entrees included - veal saltimbocca - I do not eat veal but plate left our table licked clean, risotto al funghi - very good, my flat-iron steak with gorgonzola, potatoes and veggies - I was in HEAVEN, and evening special of fresh penne with filet in tomato cream sauce. Bread was fresh and flavorful (and served hot). We brought a bottle of vino with us ($10 corkage) Shared a splendid creme brulee among four and waddled out. Only warning I would offer: this place can be very busy so service is not quick. If you are in a rush - don't go. Part of the experience was a leisurely meal - like a trattoria in Italy and food served to you that could not have been "fresher".

We just got back from dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. It was such a treat mostly because we just wanted to pop out and grab a bite and wanted to stay local so I chose this place and it really was great. I was in yoga pants & a hoodie and my husband in jeans, so we obviously were not prepared for fancy, but this place could go either way. Casual or dressy would work. Food was great. My shrimp were very nicely cooked (not dry & rubbery when overcooked.) My ravioli was yummy, the sauce was to die for. Not heavy & gunky, but it was a cream sauce. Very light & very flavorful. They didn't have a misto salad (just a small, uncomplicated salad) on the menu but the waiter was kind enough to rustle us up a lovely spring green misto with a raspberry vinagrette that just hit the spot. The salad prices are a bit dear, but to find out that they are generally split between two (and they will plate it for two as well). So the $6.95 misto salad for 2 people was fine (I had thought it was per head). Nice ambiance, pretty, high ceilings, tables well spaced, waiter well trained & very amiable. Not cheap, but all in all a lovely night out.

We had purchased a groupon for this restaurant--so we wanted to give it a try. We had a bottle of wine and we had five of us there. It was $24 for the Chardonnay and it was very low quality for what we got. Lucky Star. I enjoyed my meal-- it was a calamari shrimp type seafood meal with mashed potatoes underneath. It is amazing how little vegetable they would provide nowadays. But that dish was tasty. My daughter ordered the cioppino which was the most expensive thing on the menu. I think it was 22 or $24. And it was very spicy. But the waiter had put in the order wrong-- and she did not receive the meal until everybody was done. I find it amazing how the patron has to pay for these mistakes-- all they have to do is give her a shot-glass deserts to show their sorry. But no-- there was no offer. The fact that we have the Brigantine so close to us-- I don't think I'll give this restaurant another try. It's just not worth the value. But I wouldn't say we had a horrible evening either. The wait staff is not educated enough and I feel having to pay $25 for a tip when one of the members didn't even get their meal until everyone was done-- just shows poor training by the owner or the manager. This sort of service would never happen Outback-- which was just a couple of stores away.

Our favorite Italian restaurant! My brother, who lives in La Mesa, first got us hooked on Antica. Since then we've been going there for years. The owners and servers are very friendly and accomodating. A great place to have a bottle (or two!) of red wine and enjoy super yummy specials or traditional food. I believe that they make all of their food from scratch, so it does take a little while, but the appetizers (or just the wine) will keep you busy!

This is a great restaurant for a nice night out with some family and friends, or a date. The atmosphere is dimly lit and romantic, a candle at every table, and the whole restaurant is just extremely nice! You forget that it's in a strip-mall almost immediately upon entering. Everything from the wall decorations to the tables to the place settings to the bar area looks extremely nice. I made a reservation, but at least on a Monday night, it was completely unnecessary. I was given my choice of any open table in the restaurant, and the wait staff was just great! The food is fantastic (I went with a salad that had pears & goat cheese, then the chicken parm), and so was the wine I tried. I highly recommend this place... the ONLY reason I'm not going 5 stars is the strip-mall thing... which, again, you will completely forget about 30 seconds after walking inside!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! Food is absolutely delicious and at such a reasonable price. 5 Star dining in a strip mall hidden in La Mesa. Make sure to ask for the stuffed mushrooms as it is NOT on the menu but they will make it for you on request. Everything here is delicious, can't go wrong with any of the menu items from the Flank Steak to their Risotto, and their wide variety of wines. Waiters are amazing. Make sure to make reservations on Friday/Saturday evenings as it does get packed and will be a wait. Only one amazing chef who is preparing everything. Food is worth the wait though!

We were hoping for greatness, but were pretty disappointed. The atmosphere is nice - dark with good decor and Italian waiters. However, the food was sub-par - the bruschetta had pesto, goat cheese, and tomato. The pesto was a bit salty, the goat cheese a bit bland, and the tomatoes tasted like they came out of a can (way too sweet). Our entrees were also not that great - too oily or drowning in cream sauce. This is definitely not a 5-star establishment as many of the reviews suggest. If you have more time, I suggest an establishment in Little Italy downtown instead.

GREAT SERVICE, GREAT FOOD, TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS. We ordered the specials, but everything on the menu was special. Waiter / owner were very acccomodating. Stellar. Don't let the location fool you. San Diego's best kept secret!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't tell too many friends, I still want to be able to get a table. The Hash House a Go Go of Italian food. Great portions. I could go on forever. p.s. I'm sure that if the woman who bit into a "bad shrimp" were to have mentioned it to the staff, They would have taken care of her.

My Husband and I went here for dinner. We LOVE a good Italian restaurant and having moved from LA we have been searching high and low for one. Unfortunately this is far from what we were search for. I read on here the food was excellent and the service is wonderful the two things we were looking for. I don't know if it is our age as we have been blessed and look young but we were basically ignored. We eat out a lot and this is in the top 5 for worst service experiences ever. Luckily for them their food made up for it. Certainly not the best Italian I have had but it was pretty good for San Diego. We started with the carpacio which is one of my favorites dishes. It was pretty good but hardly had any capers (my favorite part) when I asked for a few extra they brought them 10 minutes later... and charged us extra for them. We then ordered a full size salad and an entree and asked that we split both of them. Two full dishes mind you... they informed us there would be a split charge. I explained we wanted to share a few things so we could try more and the waiter simply shrugged. Keep in mind spliting pasta does not entail extra food, simply an extra dish to wash. After waiting more then an hour for our food with not one visit from our waiter while everyone around us seemed to be getting food we finally got ours. We got the pasta with shrimp and smoked salmon in a lobster sauce. It was good but honestly I make much better. It also seemed to be a TON of pasta and just a bit of stuff.. seems to be a common occurrence here. When they brought the bill the waiter told us he would not charge us for the split charge... I think it had something to do with the wait. Sorry, too little to late. Needless to say we will never be back nor will we recommend the place to anyone. I could not believe how bad the service was and how horrible we were treated. Amazing food can not make up for that let alone food that is just simply good.

My review for Antica Trattoria is long over due. I have been dining here for over two years now and this is, hands down, my favorite Italian restaurant!!! Franco, the owner/chef has talent. Be careful, once you eat his food, you will be instantly hooked and will have no choice but to go back for more!! The atmosphere of this charming restaurant is so friendly. Franco makes a point to round throughout the dining area and greet his guests. Many times, he has also been known to share a drink with his guests and before you know it- you're friends! Beside his delicious entree's he has very friendly staff, a lovely dining area and a beautiful charming bar (which happens to be my most favorite place to sit). The bar offers bottled beer and an array of red and white wines that will perfectly compliment your meal of choice for that evening. ***BONUS*** Antica Trattoria has GLUTEN FREE PASTA! Franco is well informed of the Gluten Free lifestyle and has shared his knowledge of cross contamination and what he does to avoid it and his many menu options for a delectable gluten free meal! SALUD Francesco Basile!

My family and I went here for my first birthday dinner this past January. (I say first because my girlfriend took me out to Oceanaire on a separate occasion.) I was excited to try it since I had heard a lot about it and how La Mesa, where I live, had this great Italian place. I am trying to remember the best I can but it seems that since I cannot remember everything all that well, it affirms my decision that it was not that great. The decor was nice and the ambiance was comforting as well. The bread they served was okay, nothing special, but they at least give oil and vinegar with it, with is always a HUGE plus in my book. We tried a couple appetizers; the "Bruschetta Galosa" and the "Cozze E Vongole." Both were just average. Bruschetta can be amazing but it all depends on the bread and the ratios to which they are topped. They tasted good but were not legendary by any means. The latter, which were steamed mussels and clams was good but that is due to my love of shellfish. It too was not very memorable, but still prepared properly and with sufficient taste. As for my entree I had the "Malfatti Alle Noci", spinach ricotta ravioli in a walnut dream sauce. The sauce was too overbearing for the ravioli. Ricotta and spinach are light flavors for a filling, and the walnut dream sauce was just too powerful and should not have been based on the filling. There was also too much of it I would say. Pasta should never be swimming in sauce, unless that is gnocchi which needs the added flavor. It still tasted good, but not great by any means. I did try my girlfriend's entree which was the "Branzino Alla Mediterannea." It was sea bass topped with zucchini, roasted tomato, and a parmesan citrus sauce. It was okay, but we both love sea bass and had much higher expectations. It was prepared differently than we are used to, but I feel that they did not use that great of fish and that it was still overpriced. We had a free tiramisu for dessert that was like most tiramisus I have had, again nothing special. Overall it was just an average dining experience. There was nothing exceptional, nothing that wowed me, and nothing that I can even remember too vividly. I probably would not go here for the money knowing I could spend the same amount at Arrividerci in Hillcrest or somewhere else.

We arrived at the appointed reservation time--one recently retured Iraq vet, alive but disabled, and a VN vet. After 20 minutes of standing at the front desk, a waiter appeared and said "we're busy." Not, "sorry we are busy," but only "we're busy," and left. Another 10 minutes and another waiter, "we are very busy." I complained that we had a reservation. Another 10 minutes and we were seated. I noted the 40 minute wait. The waiter said he would get a chef. Storming toward us, a fellow who wants badly to be imposing. "We are very busy. What do you want?" "I wanted my reservation honored." "Can't you see we are busy?" "Of course I can and I have come here for years but I cannot understand why you didn't reserve a table." "We are busy! What do you want." Then a brief hesitation with me trying to figure out the hostility but vet genes kicking in and he said, "Nothing!" and stormed off. We ate, left, not to return. Vets really do not scare easy.

went last night on a groupon. the food is 5 star, the portions and regular prices are 1 star. we ordered Bruschetta appetizer for $9 and got 4 small pieces. the portions are small. the chocolate cake icecream desert was good, but small and cost $8. Had the Gnocchi with sausage and asparagus, very very good, but $18. my wife had the spinich raviolis and they were great, especially the sauce, however she only received 5 raviolis for $15.

We enjoyed the risotto with shrimp and asparagus and the linguine pescatore. Took both home for takeout. Both traveled well. Both dishes were light on the seasoning. Could have used a lot more salt and pepper. Bread was much improved from a prior visit. In all, food was very good. Both dishes were on the lighter side. They have an extensive menu and a variety of dishes, some of which sound pretty rich. Portions were generous. Very nice.

Superb. Sublime. We just got back from 3 years in Naples and didn't have a meal this good the whole time. Spinach ravioli in walnut sauce? Delicate, excellent. Tower of shrimp and avocado? Wonderful. My wife had the pear and walnut salad and short rib gnocchi. Heavy, but you'd expect that. Delicious. Good tiramisu at the end and perfect cappuccinos. There was a large party being served while we were there and other diners. Service was attentive without being annoying. Just fine. We'll be back soon.

I really like this place I was over the places in Little Italy and Downtown and wanted some good Italian food. A friend of a friend recommend Antica Trattoria and my taste buds will be thanking them for a lifetime. The setting is elegant and warm and you can really taste the love in the food. I would definitely give this place a try. I know you will come back again and again.

Highly Recommended! If you want authentic Italian, this is THE place. Just had dinner there on Tuesday and the food was amazing. The Farfalle Al Portobello and the Lasagna was outstanding. Really cozy and warm (not temp) inside. Great for date night. This is the hidden jewel of La Mesa! LOVE LOVE LOVE!

The first time I visited this restaurant, I was pretty disappointed in the food. However, I decided to try it again since the reviews were so good. I guess that was just an off night because the second time around was fantastic! :) The bread that comes to the table to start out with was very good. You can tell it is made fresh and the oil and vinegar that come with it are a great pairing. The restaurant itself is decorated nicely and the atmosphere was quite pleasant. I had an amazing homemade ricotta pasta dish that was very enjoyable. My boyfriend had the linguine and shellfish dish and he liked that as well. To top it off we had the chocolate lava cake and we can say that it is one of the best we have ever had. The only complaint I had was that the lemonade in my Arnold Palmer wasn't very good and I wish it had been fresh since they had a bar but other than that I am happy to give this restaurant a 4 star rating. The staff was friendly and attentive as well.

I am not the Dan D. who posted a negative review here. My wife & I grew up in New York CIty, my father is Italian and between us we have eaten all over much of the U.S. and also in Europe and the Carribean. I am a fairly proficient home cook and know how to make some classic sauces. We are in very strong agreement with the vast majority of reviews here. We've been dining at Antica since it opened almost a decade ago. We have a limited budget so we can't eat there too often, but the prices aren't in any way out of line for East County and are downright cheap by downtown or La Jolla standards. A very wide selection of dishes is available. You can have a great meal and not break the bank, or you can splurge and really treat yourself. On our recent visit late one Friday night Chef/owner Frank presumably recognized us as we finished our meal and came to sit with us and relax with a glass of wine after a long evening cooking some amazing meals. I had the opportunity to ask about some of his food, and his answers were both enlightening and entertaining. I pray that this fine restaurant will be here many years to come. Try it, you'll like it!

One of the worst Italian restaurants in La Mesa and East San Diego, and easily the most indifferent to bad service and poor food. We live close and tried it years ago, but the service was slow and the food cold. We read some of the recent reviews, so thought perhaps we'd had a bad night. Not so - we just tried again and it was the same bad indifferent service, 40 minutes to get two pasta dishes (none of the waiters would help us), and one of the pasta dishes comes without the main sauce. The other pasta dish was about a C grade. The wines by the glass are very cheap so it's only OK if you're looking for cheap alcohol. So stay away as we will - chose Tiramisu, or Ciao Bella, Arrivederci Rancho San Diego (yum), or even the Olive Gardens.

I tried this restaurant for the first time last night after reading positive reviews on Yelp. I really enjoyed the experience. The service was great and the waiter was friendly and attentive. For my entree I had the Risotto Verde which is a vegetarian risotto that was really good. For dessert I had the lemon sorbet which was delicious and served in a frozen lemon peel - very refreshing and yummy for the end of the meal. It was a Tuesday night so it was not busy. I would definitely go again - the menu is large and has lots of delicious sounding entrees. The owner even stopped by our table to check on everything.

Hands down, best Italian food in La Mesa. The chef, Francesco, is remarkable!!! I do not think there is a single dish that leaves his kitchen that he does not personally touch. This is the real deal folks! Flavorful Authentic Italian cuisine tucked away in little La Mesa!!! Their wine list is quite extensive for those who enjoy a glass of vino. Do try, I promise you will not be disappointed!!

they wouldnt do a take out order on a saturday night..... whats the difference?............. to add to this.... I called back an hour later to inquire about why they wouldnt and the guy told me they could do it in 20 minutes.... So i just assumed they were busy. Got there to pick up the order and the restaurant was pretty empty.....?? The food was amazing though! So this rating has nothing to do with the food

this is the best italian restaurant in san diego! the food consistently gets a five star from me. don't care where you live, it's worth driving to la mesa to eat here. beats anything in little italy..

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, and honestly I did not see what the fuss was all about. I didn't think the food was that good. I've had much better elsewhere, and the service wasn't very good either.

this is a hidden gem in La Mesa the food here are authentically italian and the bread was served warm and tender. one of the best bread that i've got. the only cons is.... some dash of salt could help make the food more flavorful and it's just overpriced... i might sound so cheap and low level here, but i still prefer california pizza kitchen's pasta over this restaurant for they serve more flavorful pastas for cheaper price. it's just my 2 cents though

This place is wonderful! Excellent service, fantastic food and wonderful atmosphere. The atmosphere is very laid back and calm, just like the restaurants in Italy and the food is just as good. I ordered the ravioli, I highly recommend it, but I also tried everything else that was ordered at my table and it was all great! I can't believe we have this wonderful restaurant within walking distance!

The best place in the East County. We have been there 5 or 6 times and the food and service is always good. We don't have to head to downtown or little Italy as often.

I live very close and dine here all of the time. Waiters are primarily cool, sometimes slow to serve drinks, etc. I've tried and love most of the items on the menu. Portobello appetizer is great. I did order the chocolate souffle the other night. The middle was chilly, at best. The head chef came out to see about the problem. He then explained that the microwave they use to make the dessert may not be working correctly. Hardly the answer i expected in a really nice place. I always though souffle took a long time to make. I guess that's why most menus have a not to order the dessert 30 minutes ahead of time. I would still recommend this place.

The food is great, the service is very jovial and enjoyable, and the restaurant itself is lovely. If it were priced more affordably I'd have maybe fived it, but I am very big on my bang: buck ratios and so I can't, for myself, give it a five. I am certainly a fan of this restaurant, though.

This is a little gem in a surprise location. I went with some co-workers to celebrate the holidays and we all really enjoyed our meals. The wine was excellent and the customer service was amazing! We were too full for dessert but the Lemoncello hit the spot! A little pricey...but the meals are so big...you could always split a plate with your dining partner.

AMAZING! My parents discovered this place a few years ago and I feel so lucky every time they bring me here. It is the most flavorful, authentic Italian food I've had in San Diego. We always have the same waiter and he is wonderful...appropriately attentive, knowledgeable & has a great memory. The owner is also a wonderful man. I feel like I'm in Italy when I eat at Antica Trattoria. Much better choice than anywhere in Little Italy or downtown. Tonight I had the capellini checca, which was incredible...but I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered here. It's all delizioso!

First off, the guy who answered the phone to take my order (I ordered take-out), was not too adept at speaking or understanding English. So, I spelled a few things out for him since he incorrectly repeated my order back to me. So, I had a feeling things would go wrong. I go to pick up my order, and I must say, the men seemed so nice. Because of their niceness, I am giving this place 1 star. I paid and took my order. As I was driving home, I smelled the smell I usually smell when dealing with raw beef. So, I knew that my steak was going to be rare even though I requested medium. No problem, I would simply warm it up at home is what I thought. However, when I arrived home and opened the containers, I was horrified! The food looked like something my kid niece had thrown together! To make matters worse, the pasta tasted like canned chef boy ardee, and the meat was so tough! People beware, this food was so awful that I threw it in the trash and went down the street to just get a plain old burger. I didn't want to re-order anything from this place after tasting the food. I am hoping that I was screwed because I ordered to-go, but I am sure this is not the case. So, if you are craving tasty, authentic Italian food (and not something from a can/box), this is the place you want to avoid at ALL costs! Don't waste your hard-earned money on crap such as this during these economic times. Trust me.

I decided to venture out to east county a few weeks ago in hopes of some delicious Italian food, and to my surprise, Antica Trattoria delivered. Who would have thought that a hokey little strip mall in La Mesa would have so much to offer?! Ok, so the food and atmosphere might not be QUITE as good as Arrivederci in Hillcrest, but it's not nearly as crowded, and there are parking spots as far as the eye can see! Minus one star for prices that belong downtown, and for slow service on a slow night.

Very yummy food. Excellent Italian food off the beat and pass. This places is a small little restaurant in a little strip mall that could easily be missed because it isn't in a more posh part of town. But don't let the strip mall setting fool you, this places serves excellent food some of the best Italian food you can get in San Diego. They have an excellent wine list and many different pasta dishes. Don't expect to eat pizza this place is all about the pasta. They have a good assortment of dishes. The specials change daily. This place is quaint with just the right amount of class without being pretentious. The service was excellent and the food was even better. I tried the pork loins my last visit and was delighted at how the made the flavor jump in to my mouth. Give this place a try and I will say with confidence you won't be disappointed

Believe it or not, our daughter, Marlies, actually introduced us to Antica a few years ago, and SHE lives in Monterey, CA, and know the finest Italian places there AND in S.F.! This is Marlies' and Gary's very favorite Italian restaurant ever!! My fave there is their Linguine Pescatore, which is not only scrumptious and makes your tongue want to slap your face off, but also is chock full of the very freshest assortment of jewels from the sea. In the more than two years we have been delighting in their delicacies, we have NEVER had a bad meal. Owner Franco and his co-chef of some 10-15 years are masters of the art of fine Italian cooking. Franco's father-in-law sometimes waits tables. If you happen to be so fortunate to have him as your server, you will be in stitches the entire time. I always describe him as the Italian Benny Hill! The entire wait staff is first-class, however! I have only one caveat. Marianne and I prefer to bring our own wines and pay the modest $10 corking fee.

This has become my boyfriend's and my favorite restaurant. The waiters are always very attentive and they always suggest a great wine to go with our dinner. I've yet to have anything here I don't like. Last night was a filet wrapped in that Italian bacon with a light cream sauce, some awesome cheesey mashed potatoes, and a pasta dish with scallops. Delicious! We've never managed to have dessert here because the food is so good. The bread with the dipping wine/vinegar that they bring out for free is a meal in itself. The maitre'd always recognizes us when we come in and even hugged us goodbye last night when we left. The chef has even come out to ask how we've liked out entrees and when it's slow, he pulls up a chair to chat. Lovely operation here - the ambiance just makes you feel at home and is so much nicer than a boring "chain" restaurant (CPK, Olive Garden, etc.), not to mention the food is fantastic. I live in Santee and the only nice little Italian restaurant I knew there (a newer place, near Best Buy and CVS) closed earlier this year. I was so happy to have discovered this true gem in La Mesa, thanks to Yelp! Only thing that could make this better for me would be a full bar (vs. beer, wine, and they now offer that reduced alcohol vodka for things like Cosmos, but a true martini snob like me knows it just isn't the same). But I know how pricey liquor licenses are, so I can live with it!

This place is a find. It's off the beaten path on Lake Murray Blvd in La Mesa, but the food is authentically Italian and very well prepared and the service is simply first rate. I went with a large crowd and we sat at two adjourning tables. I especially liked the wonderful oysters rockefeller and the ravioletti with slices of veal. It's nicely designed room, unpretentious and tasteful. Parking is easy since it's in the Von's shopping mall.

The food is always hot and fantastic. Love the bread they give you. I don't have a favorite dish though because I've been trying out a different dish every time I go because they have such great choices there. They have huge portions so I always have left overs and they still taste great the next day.

Definitely one of the best Italian places around! I went on a Friday night and it was really busy yet to be expected. Despite the crowd, service was good and the food was excellent. I had the Gnocchi (I'm addicted to it...) which had it's own consistency and taste. I live in the neighborhood and I'm sure this will become a frequent stop for me.

I couldn't believe how lucky I was to live right around the corner from this place when I lived in La Mesa. Seriously good, authentic (Northern) Italian food. The pesto gnocchi is to die for. I haven't been there in a while and I miss it. It's more for a formal occasion, and can be a little pricey, but well worth it and not nearly the sticker-shock of places in Little Italy. A well-hidden jewel in San Diego Italian cuisine.

Can you say Yum-O- Fresh! This place is a hidden jewel. We stumbled onto this place a year ago and we have become regulars. This is upscale Italian cuisine. From start to finish we are always completely satisfied. Everyone we have told has THANKED us and become a fan. Location easy to find but random, based on the quality of the service and the food you would think you were whisked away to some Sea front location in Italy. All meals are made to order so sit back and have a glass of wine (excellent selection) and order some apps. I recommend the Calamari fritti with the spicy marinara and the carpaccio, thinly sliced steak with a hint of capers and lemon...yum, All meals are fabulous we haven't found one we do not like. My husband is a meat man and he says the bacon wrapped Filet Mignon in the gorgonzola cream sauce is "The bomb!" I am a Gnocchi girl myself, let me tell you they are like puffs of heaven. I get it with Gorgonzola, pears and walnuts, let's just say if food is erotic, this is where you need to go. Good portions, delightful staff that is always near for any last minute additions. The bread is Hot and brimming, the espresso is perfect, and I do not know what that last guys was talking about but the cannoli is the best I've ever had. Most places make it soggy because they are pre-made and refrigerated which create condensation. Antica prepares each individually so the outside is crisp and flaky and the inside is creamy-licious! Real cannoli connoisseurs know how they are suppose to be prepared. You can also end your meal with a smooth housemade limoncello...this is a must try. Bon Appetito!

This is my favorite Italian restaurant in San Diego! It's the only restaurant I've been to where everything I've ever ordered is phenomenal. The quality and authenticity of the food is unmatched by any other Italian restaurant I've tried. The service is great, they are very attentive and friendly. As soon as you walk in the ambience makes you forget you're in a strip mall...and the fact that it isn't in the middle of a congested area with no parking makes it that much more of a gem. I highly recommend Antica Trattoria to anyone looking for quality Italian cuisine and a great atmosphere at affordable prices.

  • Christine J.

Having been to Italy several times, I have mostly been disappointed with the italian food in the U.S. If you want authenticity and the best service in town, you have to try Antica. It has to die for food, the best servers, who are actually Italian and know their stuff. We also go there just to have a glass of wine, and enjoy just hanging out. Don't be fooled by the strip mall front, the inside has a great ambiance and I can't stress enough that the servers make the experience that much more special. They are humorous and bring italy to your table, minus charging you for the air you breath and the table bread (which they love to do in Italy). Anyway..a perfect date place or family dinner, you decide!

  • Rick D.

No matter how someone raves about a place, it never seems to fail that the food is a disappointment. Last night was the exception. Our hosts frequent Antica regularly and for good reason. The Linguini Pescadero (spelled something like that) was absolutely superb, as was the sausage appetizer and spinach salad. It was also the best house wine I've ever had. There's nothing fancy about this restaurant, though it's comfortable enough. But there is little to compare in San Diego as far as the food. We'll be back.

Used a groupon on a Friday night (with reservations for 2). We were seated fairly promptly after they scrambled to seat a large party before us. I understand that the more tables a restaurant turns over the more money, but the seating was terrible. They engineered as many tables into this small place as possible. What could have been a nice date night was not possible here. Our table was literally 3 inches from the table next to us and a waiter's body width from the waiter station on the other side. I was closer to the woman on my left (maybe 12 inches) than my husband. Its awkward when the other table feels they should include you in their conversation, as you are so close and hear everything anyway. Food was good, but when it can't be enjoyed, it gets lost in the mire. Glad I had the coupon, but it rather backfired. For the food I would have returned, but I don't want to put up with feeling like stalled cattle. I would suppose being here on a week night would be better, but just left me with a "why bother" attitude.

If you haven't tried this place, give it a whirl! We had gone one time before and just loved the food - think it's a little too pricey for our taste to be able to go for "non special occasions," but it's great for a date night with your spouse or a birthday, anniversary, etc. This place is not your "Americanized" Olive Garden - the waiters are all Italian and speak to you in Italian when serving or greeting. The service is just beyond excellent - they attend to your every need and your glass, plate, bread, etc. is never unattended for more than minutes. The food - OMG, what can I say other than it's incredible - it's hot, fresh and each item is just cooked to absolute perfection! I had the steak and my husband had pasta - we licked our plates and just sat their (full as pigs) and awed about how great it was. It's a cutely decorated place and you just have to get past that you're in a strip mall and not in Italy - seriously, though, they have a great restaurant and they REALLY make you feel like you're in a fancy place in Italy! The only negative is that it's not really a great place for small kids - it's quiet, soft music, nice ambiance, so not be best place for rambunctious or loud children. That's when you want to go to Olivegarden!! :-)

great gnocchi great goat cheese salad but not great seafood. downtown type prices in la mesa : ( but no wait and our waiter was personable. we had the gnocchi and goat cheese salad to start and both were awesome! gnocchi melted in our mouth and the warm goat cheese salad was amazing. i had trouble deciding what to order so i got the seafood risotto and my boyfriend got the fillet special. their menu has quite a bit of selections going on so was definitely hard to pick. i was NOT happy with the seafood risotto because it tasted and looked like a bag of frozen seafood mix that you'd get from sysco. it was mostly calamari rings and tentacles with a few way over cooked pieces of fish and two mussels that were shriveled up. the risotto was ok but my boyfriend loved his steak which i am tempted to say isn't a special exactly but something that they should put on the menu because it's a "special" every night. wine selection was ok but not too expensive. not a good place for kids. we didn't have dessert because we were too full. spent over $100 without tip so not cheap. they should shorten the menu so everything they offer is amazing instead of lacking on some dishes and doing others alright. i would go back though and keep it simple. a drink and a salad.

Great northern Italian food in La Mesa. The service and cuisine are comparable to many downtown restaurants. I never expected a trattoria to pop up in the neighborhood where it is located. This place does very steady business on the weekends. My only complaint is that the small open dining room can get quite noisy.

First time eating here and we're definitely coming back. I normally don't give out more than three stars for a first time visit, but i have my reasons for the four stars. And, just like japanese at sushi restaurants, if Italians are eating there- you gotta go in and order! 1. Service: exceptional AND knowledgeable, not too in your face. Had an issue with my dish which they addressed immediately and the best way they could- which is why i am giving four stars for my first time visit. The waiter and the owner explained/apologized compensated without any fuss. No complaints. 2. Ambiance: Nice, and a breath of fresh air for La Mesa, Del Cerro, San Carlos. Actually reminds me a few restaurants in southern Italy/Med. 3. Starter: We had the Burrata special. Absolutely perfect with the sweetest undertones. I was a bit concerned that the tomatoes were too under-ripe, but they were sweet and GREAT. The burrata was soooo good- different from my equally beautiful burrata experience at the Blue Ribbon, so def worth a try. 4. Main: I had the Veal Chop and it was RAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The sauce, not too powerful, but all the star players were there and no one was fighting with the other. Scott had the Linguine with clams, mussels, etc, in a red sauce. Very nice, delicate flavor- not the robust red sauces many of us are used to, so if you're looking for a powerful red sauce, this is not the dish for you- opt for the white wine sauce instead. 5. Dessert: Cannoli- perfect, creamy, the only other perfect restaurant prepared cannoli i have had in San Diego was from Cafe Zucchero, when the cute, old Sicilian man was working there when they first opened years ago. 6. Espresso test: Yelpers that know me, know my long standing issues with espresso at many of the restaurants here. This was just a 3. They need to work on this. It may just be that they're not packing it properly- who knows, but it doesn't have the thick-caramelesque crema that a memorable espresso has (Try Pappalecco, Zucchero, Italia and Gelato Vero). It had some crema on it and it did leave a residue on the cup, so I can't bash it. Great for: dinner with house guests and the in-laws; romantic dinner; business; foodie groups. Nice casual attire is recommended, not too dressy, but not too sloppy.

Yummiest Italian I've had in SD yet. I had the gnocchi alla b...something! (had mushrooms, red sauce, goat cheese..) I've never had such yummy gnocchi!!! Nice and tender and tasty. My boyfriend had the lasagne and I just finished inhaling his leftovers for dinner. Yum. ;) Check it out!

Let me first say I would give this place 5 stars but having to wait almost 40 minutes after our reservation time knocked it down. It seems to be the norm after reading other reviews. The entire staff was very friendly and accomdating. My boyfriend took my young daughters and I to a nice dinner here. They didn't have anything on the menu my children would like but the waiter arranged for a marinera sauce with fettuchini noodles to be prepared for them. I was extremely grateful for that! Everyone at our table enjoyed the bread and balsamic. The busser was very helpful and kept out bread basket full. He also joked with my daughters a little bit which they are still laughing about. I tried the flat iron steak and I felt that it was excellent. My boyfriend had chicken which he also enjoyed. This place is wonderful and completely unexpected. You would never imagine something so nice would be hidden away in a strip mall! A plus is if you don't care for the fancy deserts you can walk a few doors down to golden spoon for some frozen yogurt when you are done. Give this place a try... you won't be dissapointed! Just be prepared to wait a little... even with a reservation.

I ate here tonight with my husband. The service was great. I had the eggplant, and the reason for 3 stars and not a higher rating is the marinara sauce, it was super salty and a little sweet. I am almost always adding salt to food and I could barely eat my dish because it was way too salty. Also the espresso was disgusting. My husband had a pasta and seafood dish that he really like, and the wine was good, and like a stated earlier the service was great. I might try Antica again, but I would definately not order the marinara.

I figured with an average of 4.5 stars this place would be really good. It wasn't. The service was good but the food was below average and too expensive. There were several of us that went and we tried each others food to get a good idea of what menu entailed. The capellini was way over cooked (mush) and really bland. The person who ate it added salt and had the waiter come over a couple time to keep adding parmesan cheese. The chicken Picatta was over cooked, dry and tough. The lobster ravioli which was $24 hardly had any lobster in the raviolis. The person who ate ravioli said that when he found a piece it was like chewing on a pensil eraser. I do admit the cesar salad with side of anchovies was really good. Other than that a big disappointment. Probably won't be back.

UPDATE: Valentine's Day 2010: Yikes. What a mistake this was. We made reservations for February 14. Italian, romantic, been there before...what could go wrong? Lots. The management 's decicion to limit their regular menu for V Day was a poor choice. I should have left immediately upon realizing this, but I didn't. Bottom line: A small portion of dry fish for $28? A bottle of so-so wine for $34? The bill for two was $160. C'mon! I can no longer recommend this restaurant. It's in a STRIP MALL and charges prices commensurate with a top-level La Jolla Trattoria. Sorry, folks, but you must work on your prices or change your location to BirdRock in La Jolla. Your food, wine and service just aren't justified by the prices. I rate this place a solid C, possibly a C-. Diner beware.

Went here last night with my family after buying a $35 Groupon. I have been looking forward to this place for a long time especially since I can walk there! I thought the food and service was very good. It was a packed Saturday night. I had the gnocci, parents had salads and some kind of pasta. We all enjoyed our food. Parents raved about the bread, but I didn't care for it. Only 3 complaints: 1. They sit you VERY close to other people. I had to whisper when I was saying things that were socially inappropriate LOL. 2. The prices seem to be a tad bit high IMO. 3. I guess Trader Joe's is gourmet. The gnocci at AT tastes IDENTICAL to Trader Joe's frozen gnocci except that AT throws on fresh basel and more mozzarella cheese Have one more Groupon to this place :)

I'm not a huge Italian food fan but this place might change my mind. Thanks to Yelp we decided to try Antica Trattoria while passing through La Mesa. All around solid restaurant. I had gnocchi caprese for my pasta and veal piccata for the main. The gnocchi was melts in your mouth soft on the outside, tender inside. The sauce was fresh and you can't beat slightly melted fresh mozzarella. The veal piccata was also very good. Piccata is probably my favorite Italian sauce. I like the burst of salt and capers to contrast the lemony cream. The veal was a tad dry, but otherwise very good. I would take a pass on the homemade cannolis next time though. The shell was over fried.

I had the spinach ravioli with walnut cream sauce and my wife had the risotto with mushroom. I thought the walnut sauce was tasty but the ravioli was bland, like they came out of a can. My wive said the risotto was bland and needed to add seasoning. Service wasn't as good as you would want. Long wait to get ordered wine because only two waiters working.. Did like the ambiance of the place. the murals were a nice touch. Didn't feel like you were in a store plaza

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
